This research project undertakes an investigation of the daily lives and identity expressions of non-elite women during Egypt’s New Kingdom and early Third Intermediate Period (1539-943 BCE). Specifically, the study will explore how gender roles were attributed to or assumed by women, whether and how women articulated self-perception and agency in textual sources, which aspects of identity were foregrounded in their textual expression and social engagement, and how these gendered expressions intersected with class, age, status, and profession.
